Respect

Respect is a trait that everyone should have and carry very strongly with them throughout their entire life. It is hard to clearly explain the outline and definition of respect. But it is a feeling that can be mutually understood and felt. Merriam Webster defines respect as “a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important, serious, etc., and should be treated in an appropriate way”. In the military respect of an NCO is demanded and should be given without any hesitation. If an NCO asks you to do something you should show him or her the respect and do what they say. Don’t argue, just do it. In the Army this often comes into play on a daily basis whether being on duty or off.

Respect is an understanding and a feeling whether good or bad. The movie Forest Gump has many examples of people not respecting and respecting each other. You can respect something or disrespect something. But how you go about that scenario may determine the outcome of what could happen. If you respect something the outcome will most likely have no issues in the end. With something that you don’t respect and show disrespect toward may have consequences that could make things worse. Whether it is in the work place, around family or during your free time a person that is in a higher position than yourself you should always show respect. Even if you disagree you shouldn’t show disrespect, understand what that person is saying. When that individual is speaking don’t only see it from your point of view and try to see their point of view. If it involves you to do something you should do it with no hesitation.

Being in the military any person with a rank higher than yours deserves your respect no matter what your opinion of them is. The military especially the Army demands respect of any NCO or Officer.
