Water and Minerals

The human body needs water in order to survive. On average about 60% of an adult human body is made up of water. In our most liquid areas of the body thrives on water in order to function properly. Water is contained mostly in the cells, but is also in the spaces between the cells and also in the blood. In newborns, about 70% of the body is composed of water. Other than cell life and composure, water is essential to transportation of nutrients, helps regulate the body temperature and waste elimination. It is important to intake enough water regularly to ensure proper body function. Excessive lack of water intake can lead to dehydration

Dehydration occurs when the body releases more water than is consumed. Dehydration can occur in different ways such as: not drinking enough water, excessive sweating or illness that cause vomiting and diarrhea. The most common effect of dehydration is excessive thirst, but can also include, fatigue, constipation and lightheadedness. The easiest solution for dehydration is to consume water. In extreme cases, Water may need to be administered via IV.

Minerals are important to health in the body. There are many variances of minerals and each has its own specific function to the body. Minerals can be broken down into two groups, Major minerals and Trace minerals. Major minerals are needed in larger amounts in the body than trace minerals. Because the amounts needed in the body differ, does not make one more essential than the other.

Major minerals consist of sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and sulfur. Trace minerals consist of iron, iodine, copper, zinc, selenium, fluoride, chromium and molybdenum. Many of these minerals can be found in the same sources, like magnesium and copper can be found in nuts and seeds, and zinc and phosphorus can be found in meat, fish and poultry.
