Overview

The overall objective of this organizational profile is to set the context for understanding United Nations as a whole and the Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) of UN to identify the vision, challenges and core competences necessary for developing an appropriate training programme that will support the staff and organizational development of all UN staff.

UN Background

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress as well as improving living standards and human rights. The work of the United Nations reaches every corner of the globe. Although best known for peacekeeping, peacebuilding, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance, there are many other ways the United Nations and its System (specialized agencies, funds and programmes) affect our lives and make the world a better place.

OHRM Background

As part of the Secretary-General’s commitment to “Investing in People”, the Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) is dedicated to the development of a flexible, versatile and mobile workforce characterized by strengthened partnerships across functions and disciplines to fulfill the Organization’s complex and interrelated mandates in an efficient and cost-effective manner (OHRM, 2013).

UN Mission

The United Nations has four main missions. First is to keep peace throughout the world; Second is to develop friendly relations among nations; help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms is regard as United Nations’s third mission. For the fourth mission, UN is dedicated to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
