Sleepiness at Work: Employee Fatigue

A. Through-out this essay the topic of fatigue in the workplace will be discussed. How and why it occurs, how it affects businesses, and what mangers and companies can do to limit it. What experts and researchers in psychology and management say about worker fatigue will be highly stressed. Workplace fatigue plays a very important role in management because of how subtly exorbitant it can be to organizations. Employers have to be informed on the subject in order to properly combat against tiredness in their employees. There is a strong correlation between employee performance and employee fatigue in the workplace environment.

B. The first thing to discuss about fatiguiness is fatiguiness. What exactly is it. According to the Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health, it lists it as “a state of increased discomfort and decreased efficiency resulting from prolonged exertion; a generalized feeling of tiredness or exhaustion; loss of power or capacity to respond to stimulation.” It should also be noted that fatigue and sleepiness are two different states. Sleepiness is the tendency to fall asleep, while, fatigue is the body’s response to loss of sleep or to sustained physical or mental extortion(). Fatigue may be reduced by sedentary activity or rest without sleeping, whereas, sleepiness and the propensity for sleep are often worsened by sedentary activity or rest(). While the states are similar, their differences should be known. Now that fatigue is properly defined, what causes the metal state can be addressed.

Why does fatigue occur. Why are some people more prone to workplace fatigue. The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine did a nationwide survey in 2012 that analyzed nearly 30,000 American workers.
