“Two Years Are Better Than Four”

In “Two Years Are Better Than Four,” Liz Addison says, “The community college system is America’s hidden public gem. If I were a candidate for office I would campaign from every campus” (213). Addison writes this not to advertise her political run for office, she wants everyone to know that there are community colleges available. I strongly agree with her. If everyone knew of the importance of education, and the availability to get this education without the costs and acceptance of a four year university, more people would enroll in the closest community college.

“The philosophy of the community college, and I have been to two of them, is one that unconditionally allows its students to begin” (212). To achieve any goal you need to “begin” that goal. Unfortunately, economic struggles and low income have made this difficult to go to a four year university without putting yourself in major debt. To add to this, when you complete your education you need to find a job that will pay the bills and pay off your college debt. The community college gives everyone that opportunity. Low-income students need not worry about the cost. With low cost enrollment and financial aid and grants available, everyone can begin their lives with the knowledge they need to succeed.

The community college is a great jumping off point. If a student wants to transfer to a four year college, they will begin with knowledge and maturity learned from the community college. Addison writes that, “you will grow up a little bit with your first English class, a bit more with your first psychology class, a whole lot more with your first biology, physics, chemistry,” (213). The life experiences you learn at college will broaden your mind and clear the path for you to succeed at university. Student will have the opportunity to not only learn but to help the community, experience self-discovery, and decide if they are on the right path. This experience is...
