Drawing on what you have learnt from the Making Social Lives DVD and Learning Companion 1, outline how some benefit and others lose on a street that you know.
Farningham Road is a street in Sussex I grew up on as a child and visit regularly. The street comprises of a train station, a row of shops including a café, bakery, newsagents and a larger Sainsbury’s store. The street has a row of semi-detached houses opposite the station. I am going to look at how some benefit and others lose on this street.
Farningham Road is home to the towns busy train station and brings many people to the street. This itself benefits the street as it brings passing trade to everyone on the street. People coming from the station use the café, newsagents and also the Sainsbury’s. Night time however seems to bring problems at the station as large groups of younger people like to congregate there meaning some people will not use the shops on the street, this means the shops all lose. The residents also lose as some are elderly people who are intimidated by these gangs of younger people. As seen on the Making Social Lives DVD the street becomes a different place at night being used by different types of people. (Making Social Lives Scene 8)
The traffic on Farningham Road is a big problem similar to that on City Road (DVD & Simon et al page 21 & 25). The cars park outside the houses and so obstruct the pavement for pedestrians and residents trying to access their driveways. Pedestrians with prams or those with impaired vision would lose as the street is then not accessible for them. There is also nowhere for pedestrians to cross safely and so makes it dangerous for those with disabilities or impaired vision. Farningham Road would benefit greatly from better street furniture and better planning as on City road (Making Social Lives DVD scene 5, Material lives scene 1 & 2).
The café on Farningham Road has a great sense of community just like Taste Buds café on City Road. People really...
