1. Course Description and Objectives Information systems are currently having a significant impact on organizations and the way business is conducted. Understanding the direct impact information and information systems have on an organization’s bottom line is crucial to running a success business. This course aims at introducing students to the fundamental concepts of information systems and how these systems support managerial and operational tasks in the contemporary business environment. The spectrum of information technologies used in business will be discussed, along with selected applications. Topics include foundation concepts, hardware and software, data resource management, enterprise business systems, business intelligence, e-Business, business and IT strategies, business solutions, security and ethics, and global information system. Emphasis will be placed on describing the role IT plays in increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of core business processes. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to complete the following key tasks: 1. Define basic concepts, terminologies,, and principles of information systems. 2. Recognize the importance of information systems to the success of any organizations. 3. Describe the potential capabilities, use, and application of different types of information systems within and across organizations. 4. Assume the role of a decision maker or consultant to the decision maker in various managerial situations related to information systems. 5. Differentiate and understand the role and functions of various current and emerging information technologies and their potential impact on strategic planning. 6.
