Marcus is 56 years old. He lives in London with his wife Kate. A year ago Marcus had a stroke which left him unable to move his left arm and with very slurred speech due to him face muscles being affected. Marcus worked part time in a local garden centre and would like to go back to work now that he is recovering. He feels that he would be able to work on the tills and do paperwork task just as efficiently as the other workers. Marcus recently received a letter saying that he would not be considered for return to work as his condition would mean that he would not be as effective as he was and that the building does not have suitable disabled facilities.

Hetty is 35 years old and works as a nurse in Manchester. She decided to go for a promotion two weeks ago; she had all the right qualifications and is very well thought of at her place of work. The interview started well and Hetty felt really confident. That was until one of the panel asked her if she was planning to have anymore children (she has an eight year old). Hetty said that she and her husband were thinking of having another child and from that point on Hetty felt that they lost interest in her. She has just found out that she didn’t get the job and a less experienced colleague did.

Tilly is 21 and at university. She works at a bar to earn money for her day to day goods and her rent. Last Friday she noticed that Ben, another student, also 21 was given much more money than her. She checked the rota and they had done the same amount of hours. She questioned her boss and he explained that Ben deserves more money as he is stronger and can lift barrels out of the cellar. He also said that men are more effective at bar work, hence the extra money. Tilly feels very angry as she feels that she works just as hard as Ben.
