Morocco: An Economy in The Service of The Monarchy

Both pre- and post-independence, Morocco has been ruled by a monarchy. The royal family descended from the alaouite dynasty, which was established in 1666 and is still in place until today. Since independence, three Kings have succeeded each other: Mohammed V, Hassan II, and Mohammed VI. Each one of them reigned differently and with different objectives. In this paper, I am going to focus on the ways the Moroccan monarchy, as a form of government, is affecting Morocco's economy. Even if each one of these Kings was different in the way they ruled the country, they all had the same purposes: keep the monarchy in place and take advantage of it.

Throughout this paper I will try to answer the following question: why is an absolute monarchy, as a form of government, harmful to the economic development in Morocco? the paper will give a background of the Moroccan economy and how it evolved since its independence, and do an analysis to be able to compare it to the Moroccan economy during colonization. In other words, explain how the actual policies and government are still benefiting a small portion of the Moroccan population rather than all Moroccans. The research paper will focus on the reason why the royal family's involvement in the economy has impacted the development. Comparing to other monarchies around the world, the one in Moroccan is still heavily present in all the processes of voting policies and making economical choices, which is affecting the business environment.

In March 30th, 1912, the French Protectorate was established in Morocco, while at the same time the actual Moroccan institutions and monarchy were maintained.
