Students with Severe and Multiple Disabilities

The definition of disability can be described as either a mental or physical impairment that throws off or hinders one or multiple activities in an individual's life. The number of, type, and severity of disabilities are different from one person to the next. This means that there are some people who have a more severe case of a disability than others, and there are those who have more than one kind of disability. It is said that those who have more than one form of disability suffer from multiple disorders. Some types of disabilities include: deafness, blindness and being paralyzed or handicapped in the limbs.

Many aspects of an individual's life can be affected by a disability. Of course there is the obvious physical portion that is affected, but other areas include education and emotional/social aspects. Because education is a major part of every person's life, anything that can alter it can not be overlooked. Everyone is entitled to an education no matter if they are disabled or not. It is this simple fact that has educational professionals around the world looking to change the educational system in a way that it will cater to students with disabilities. For this essay I did not have to visit a special education program, I work in one, so I just picked apart the brains of the teachers I worked with to find the answers to some very interesting questions.

How Do They Define The Disorders In Terms of Education?

When it comes to education, a disability can been seen as a gap in years of a student's potential and their performance exhibited in their work. Meaning that there is a certain part of that student's life that hinders their potential to do better by putting extra challenges in their way. There are multiple types of disabilities such as bipolar disorder, autism, cerebral palsy, among others. There are unique needs for students with disabilities and certain "special"services are required for them.
