A Chemical Scavenger Hunt
Look around your house, yard, and neighborhood and identify an object or substance which qualifies as each of the following:
* An element: An example of an element would be my gold ring.
* A heterogeneous mixture: An example of this would be the balsamic vinaigrette in my refrigerator.
* A homogenous mixture: An example of this would be the cup of coffee I had this morning.
* A gas-liquid mixture: An example of this would be the soda in my refrigerator.
* A malleable substance: An example of this would be the playdoh my nephew was playing with yesterday.
* A solid-liquid mixture: I think an example of this would be my ice water.
* A substance which has a volume of 1 cm3: An example of this would be the sugar cubes I put in my coffee in the morning.
* An edible example of a physical change: An example of this would be melting ice cream, I ate it last night.
* An edible example of a chemical change: An example of this would be the pop rocks I love to eat.
* A pure compound which contains ionic bonds: An example of this is the salt we use to salt our food.
* A pure compound which contains covalent bonds: An example of this would be the ammonia I use to clean my house.
* A mixture that can be separated by filtration: An example of this would be the spaghetti noodles in water I made last night.
* A mixture that can be separated by some other method than filtration: An example of this would be seawater and salt.
* A substance with a density less than 1g/mL: An example of this would be ice I think.
* A substance with a density more than one: Again an example of this would be my gold ring, or the silver baby rattle of my sons.
* A metal: The aluminum pop can in my recycling is an example of this.
* A non-metal: An example of this would be the graphite in my pencil.
