Global Warming Alert

Former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Al Gore, has been speaking up about global warming for the last decade and presenting his DVD documentary on global warming. Based on the documentary, global warming is the increase in the temperature of the Earth’s air and oceans causing the destruction of the atmosphere and ozone layer. The Apollo 8 space mission was the first mission into space that had taken a picture of earth from space. The result of this picture was astonishing to the scientific and environmental community. This made them research what global warming is and the effects of it.

Did you know that the atmosphere is very vulnerable? Pollution thickens up the atmosphere called the greenhouse effect. One of Al Gore’s college professors found out that there is a mass of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere called CO2. The way they found that it was there was by using weather balloons. They found that during the winter and fall seasons, the CO2 in the atmosphere is very high. In the winter, most of the vegetation around the world is gone and cannot take in the CO2 from the humans excess gases. In the summer and spring, there is vegetation all over the world and all of the plants can easily take in CO2 for there photosynthesis. After the plants go through that process, the by product that it releases is oxygen back into the atmosphere which improves the atmosphere.

Did you know that the majority of the continents are above the equator? Since all the continents are above the equator, most of the vegetation is above the equator; therefore most of the pollution and CO2 comes from above the equator. They started to measure CO2 in the atmosphere back in 1958 and found that CO2 increases every year. They were able to find this information by using a core drill. A core drill drills through the ice cap in either Antarctica or other large ice caps. It drills a three yard long and two inch diameter circle and...
