Information Technology can support a company’s business processes and decision making while also giving it a competitive advantage. Some examples of business processes include the implementation of transaction processing systems, process control systems for say a manufacturing company, and enterprise collaboration systems. Once these business processes are put into place then the company will need to roll out a set of management processes to oversee the day to day operation and implementation of the business processes. These management processes can include but are not limited to the management information systems which support business making decisions such as sales analysis, production performance, and trend reporting. Then there are executive information systems that can aid in the ease of access to analyses of business performance, actions of competitors, and economic developments to support strategic planning. There are also decision support systems which can help make choices on product pricing, profitability forecasting, and risk analysis.

Today the use of Internet, intranets and extranets has a profound influence on how companies are able to support their business processes and activities.
