Program process

This refers to the leadership style, skills, and methods used by the TRS to animate the program or bring the program to life and to enhance the quality of the overall experience of the participant.

The skill with which the TRS facilitates the program and guides the client to the attainment of benefits and outcomes is his/her successful and effective application of TR leadership.

Participating in TR should be a positive experience for clients

Therapeutic recreation programs should be fun and enjoyable. Fun can be motivated and creates an atmosphere in which clients want to continue to grow, change and fulfill their potential

Fun and enjoyment are the unique qualities of the TR experience

The instrumental value of TR is jeopardized if the activity is not enjoyable, and if the TR is too directive and prescriptive

Participation in TR may be emotional, challenging, and thought provoking, bringing about feelings of satisfaction and self-worth as the client experiences personal fulfillment. It is how the TRS conducts the program that produces the benefits and outcomes for the client.

To evaluate the program process, the TRS needs to ask the following questions:

1. Are the clients having fun and enjoying themselves?

2. When I interact with the clients, do I talk to all of them, use their names, and give them support, encouragement and positive feedback?

3. Am I using appropriate motivation, teaching and reinforcement techniques?

4. Am I aware of the participants, individual learning styles and providing a balance of challenging and success orientated opportunities?

5. Is my leadership style appropriate for the activity, and do I vary it according to the clients needs and levels of functioning?

6. Do the clients have opportunities to take on responsibility for assisting with leading the activity, help others, organizing the materials, cleaning up and planning?
