Cricket

Cricket is a sport of huge popularity in the Middle East and with countries belonging to the United Kingdom. Unfortunately it doesn’t have that same popularity in the states, so that’s why this paper is designed to give some insight on the sport as a whole. The sport has a long and interesting history behind it. Cricket and baseball have a lot in common with each other but you would have to know the sport to realize these similarities. However they also have a lot of differences that make the two sports unique from each other. I will give descriptions of what all the players do and where they are located on the field. This paper will also describe how the game is played. Then give you descriptions of most important rules that fall into the 41 laws. Lastly I will give you descriptions of the equipment they use. Hopefully giving you a complete picture of what cricket is.

Cricket, also called the Gentleman's game, is a bat-and-ball team sport that is first documented as being played in southern England in the 16th century. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica the sport's earliest mention was in a 1598 court case which referred to a sport called cricket being played by boys at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford England around 1550. It is believed that it was originally a children's game but around 1610 archives indicate that adults had started playing it and the earliest reference to inter-parish or village cricket occurred soon afterwards. During the 17th century, numerous references indicate the growth of cricket in the southeastern end of England and it is believed that the first professionals appeared in that area in the years following. A newspaper report that survived from that era reports of “a great cricket match” with eleven players on each side that was played for high stakes in 1697, this was the earliest known reference of a cricket match being of such importance.
