The Four Functions of Management

Every organization, regardless of size, has to create and implement their own management concepts for the business to run smoothly and accomplish the vision, goals, and objectives. To accomplish all of these an organization would be wise to utilize the four functions of management. They would be planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. These are the foundations for all management concepts.

The first function is planning; this is the basis of all functions of management. It is the crux upon which the three other functions should be built. Planning is an ongoing process. It requires management to evaluate where the organization is and where they would like to see it in the future. There are uncontrollable factors that may affect the organization. Many of these factors may cause an organization to change course of action in accomplishing certain goals, this is known as strategic planning. By using strategic planning an organization can determine the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threat of the organization.

Organizing is the second function of management. Management has to organize the resources available within the organization. Determining a course of action is essential for the planning process. Management must also determine the internal structure and look at the different divisions or departments. The work will then be divided amongst the appropriate departments. Responsibility will also be delegated based upon authority.

The third function of management is directing. Directing is essential for all organizations, its gives management the ability to influence and oversee the behavior of the employees. It also allows them to assist employees in accomplishing goal, personal or professional. Management usually influences employees through motivation, communication, department dynamics, and department leadership. Motivated employees are known to go above and beyond in job performance....
