Gonzalo Trevino Period Four Catholic Social Teaching What The Church Teaches About Homosexuality Questions: 1. Father John Harvey shifted the church’s view on homosexuality by taking some of the blame away from homosexuals since in most cases it is discerned or discovered, not freely chosen, it is not automatically blameworthy. 2. Being a homozexual is not morally wrong because the sexual impulses they feel are natural. Their impulses are different only because they are directed towards a different gender. This doesn't make it morally wrong. 3. God’s two fold purpose of sexual intercourse is to procreate with him and to feel a means of communication filled with love. 4. The church calls homosexuals to live a life of chastity because when they have sexual intercourse the are not fulfilling God’s plan for what sexual intercourse should be. 5. The church challenges homophobia and other mistreatment of homosexuals because prejudice shown to homosexual persons because we must be mindful of the inherent and abiding dignity of every human person. 6. The church advises that parents stay with their children when they come out of the closet, not abandon them. Many a times parents are so furious of what their child has become that they disown them. This leads to many teen suicides. Parents need to love them at all costs. 7. Jesus’ mandate to love one another as he has loved us applies heavily to the homosexual topic. Only because these people are different doesn't mean that we have to mistreat them. 8. Jesus’ mandate strengthens our relationships with “other people”. Even though another person and I are completely different I should still show them my love. Jesus’ mandate creates a bridge between different races, genders, and religious persuasions.
