Shadow IT are new and innovative IT systems and solutions that are used by end-users within a company, but are used without the company’s consent. There are numerous upsides of the new Shadow IT, however, there are some drawbacks. Software asset management (SAM) compliance may lead to unnecessary risk for your organization such as financial costs and fines to ensure the new software has a license, and also jail time for the CIO that has allowed it to happen. Government acts must also be conformed by the organizations so they do follow the business code of ethics. Shadow IT allows personnel’s that works outside of the IT department to find and manage data, which adds hidden costs for the organization. Inefficiencies within a workplace could be common such as data loss or leaks of information due to inexperienced employees handling the data. Investments that have been poured in on current and upcoming information technology would be wasted if it were to be replaced simply by Shadow IT systems and solutions. Most importantly, management could have dysfunction and bitterness between IT related workers and the rest of the organization due to data and information getting in the ‘wrong’ hands, which can result in data hoarding for self promotion and other selfish deeds that could be detrimental for an organization. Despite these drawbacks there are positive things that pertains to Shadow IT. Shadow IT improves productivity for all non-IT related workers and it makes accessing and sharing data that much easier. Since the main goal of an organization is to satisfy the consumers, Shadow IT allows employees to be more productive by quickly collecting and distributing information and data. The reason behind the employees being quick and efficient is due to not going through an IT personnel and getting the data from them.
