From Filing to Designing

Until about two years ago, I was a very naïve high school senior who knew nothing about what “work” was like. Now, a little less naïve, working for about two years, and I understand that the work I know now is nothing like the works I will come to know as a graphic designer.

As a young designer, and young adult, my goals are probably not as broad as those of my fellow peers. I like to take everything one step at a time. Although I may not be the most patient person, I understand that things come with time, and that I won’t be in a Senior Graphic Design position anytime soon. I know that I won’t be able to create a global impact unless I start locally. Changing tomorrow doesn’t happen unless you start changing today, even if tomorrow is ten years from now.

I have been drawn to the packaging aspect of design since I started classes at Academy of Art University in Fall 2012. The feeling of someone shopping at a store, and being able to pick up something that I created: something that I thought up and literally brought to life. I love the physical aspect of it, especially in such an ever-growing digital world.

As much as I enjoy the fact that I am going to college, and majoring in something that I have wanted to do since my Freshman year of high school, I don’t think that I would entirely want to start in a new job right after I graduate from college. I am quite attached to my current job, especially since it is the first job that I have ever had. I really wouldn’t mind staying where I work now, doing freelance work on the side, until I am ready to leave my current job. I also like the freedom that comes from freelance work, because it lets “you get to choose…what type of projects you want to work on”(Cass, “Design Agency VS Freelance Life”). I think that in order to get a good graphic design job or internship worth leaving my current job for, I need some more time to build up a professional and successful portfolio.
