A Christian Worldview Perspective

Everyone has a worldview, whether consciously or subconsciously. We all have certain assumptions or presuppositions and beliefs about reality and life that alters the way we perceive the world. Without such presuppositions one can’t give a rational defense of their own belief system. Faith and tolerance are generally considered core American cultural values. However, in a democratic society, those who defend the sacredness of religious principles often find themselves in opposition with those who defend the freedom of individuals wishing to express their viewpoints. A healthy Christian worldview can reduce the negative influences of secular worldviews and entrench the positives by respecting, understanding, and appreciating the rich diversity of an individual’s system of belief and that of world religions thus, experiencing harmony in their differences.

Presuppositions are key to developing a worldview. James Orr, a 19th century church historian, said that a developed worldview supplies answers to questions of origin, purpose, and destiny (Wade, 2010). The elements that provide the framework for a person’s worldview can be broken down into five components: God, reality, knowledge, ethics, and human nature. The secular worldview is in conflict with the Christian views. Therefore, Christians must adhere to a biblical worldview in all aspects of life. They must present to the world a biblical perspective or Christian worldview that encompasses every niche of their existence which has been absorbed through education, science, arts, politics, and morality.
