Environmental conservation is a Western concept

Nature conservation is a relatively new phenomenon. Environmental protection firstly was concept for preserving nature and its habitants. From later colonisation era until today we have managed to kill solely over 100 mammal species only to extinction (1). It seems just cruel fact that people do not care how they get their satisfaction. Indigenous people have managed to preserve most of environmental and natural habitats in America. However in some cases there has been overusing natural recourses. In Africa this problem has exceeded the reasonable lines. Wildlife conservation has been seen as exclusive, even authoritarian, in the colonial era and beyond. Such resettlement and engineering projects, rooted in a scientific and modernising logic, have been subjected to particularly critical scrutiny because they outlived the colonial era and remained central in the development strategies of independent African states and international agencies. This essay will make an attempt to explore how and why environmental conservation is a Western concept and why we should think before we act.

A good example would be to look at the Yellowstone National Park – perhaps the most well-known national park and tourist magnet in the world. Every year over a million visitors tend to go in this park for vacation or for other activities. The Yellowstone National Park was not set aside strictly for ecological purposes. The initial idea was to create something similar to the scenic resorts and baths in England, Germany, and Switzerland (2). Basically, the plan was to build an exclusive resort for the upper classes. After some research, photos and lots of reports from the area, the US Government decided to make it a national park. Land was withdrawn from auction and an act of dedication was signed.
