Case Study Using Facebook

1.

There are several advantages in researching a candidate’s face book as listed below with reasons:

a.

Checking likes of different activities and social gathering- you will be able to see if they will fit with the culture at your work.

b.

Checking the types of friends they have- again you can see if they will fit your culture. “Birds of a feather flock together”. If most of their friends seem like crazy maniacs that are blowing things up and partying all the time- the candidate may likely be the same.

c.

Checking posting- you may be able to see if they drink excessively, do drug, live a rowdy life, how they feel about the world, if they are dangerous…etc.

d.

Checking photos- same as listed above.

e.

Checking groups that they are involved in- may give you an idea of true interest.

f.

Checking religious and political backing- to see if they will fit with the company and organiztion

Legal and ethical risk of checking Facebook accounts:

a.

People lists there religious views, age, and you are able to see their skin color before you even interview them, if that discourages the recruiter choice that would be discrimination based on Title VII

b.

Typically age is posted and the recruiter could run into trouble because of age discrimination.

c.

It is possible that the recruiter can see that the candidate just recently became pregnant and choose not to hire which would be Pregnancy Discrimination.

d.

Ethical issues that would arise- it’s just not fair to judge a person personal life based on Facebook. It’s an invasion of privacy. What people post on Facebook can be misleading, and not really match up with the person true character. It may appear that a person drinks all the time, but in all actuality it may just be a few drinks with her friends on the weekends.
