Case 5.1 21st Century Onboarding

1. The case introduces three companies of very different sizes with different on boarding approaches. What differences do you see in their approaches? What similarities?

The companies vary a little in their approach to the on boarding process. All three companies have different goals to accomplish. Sun wants to make good impressions, El Paso wants to provide the necessary tools and Zimmerman wants to inform of their philosophy. They share a common goal which is to ensure a good on boarding experience. All three companies have expedited their orientation process and use the computer to deliver the information.

2. Are there important ideas missing from all three approaches? If so, what are they?

Virtual webinars take away from the human approach. When using e learning the information is provided but there is no way of getting a question answered immoderately like in a live session. This is important as the new hires are usually full of questions.

3. What approach sounds best to you? Why?

I like the Zimmerman approach. The CEO makes time to meet with the new hires and personally shares the story of how the company was created. A periodic checklist is provided to the new hires to help guide them with the tasks they need to do. The end process is then reviewed by the supervisor to make certain the new hire has completed all the on boarding process. The process is followed- up further via feedback from the new hire. Their process is very thorough and I believe the candidates are better prepared than with the other two companies.
