CREATIVE TECHNIQUES USED IN OREO FUNSTIX COMMERCIAL

This commercial is created by the Oreo Company in order to introduce their new product. With the power of being a worldwide known company, Oreo shows no hesitation in taking risks, trying something completely new and also supporting this idea with a creative commercial. Commercial is mainly about the milk drinking competition between a boy and an elephant. The interesting part in this is that the boy is using his new Oreo Funstix to drink his milk and the elephant is using its hose. Use of creativity starts with this main element and gets supported the use of sarcastic images, comparison and sound devices.

An elephant sitting in a kitchen is a humorous and a sarcastic image which attracts the attention of the audience immediately. Creating a scene which includes an animal and a child will form the potential target and create the wanted image combined with sarcastic elements. When the elephant leaves the room, child tells him to grow up as if he is old enough to say that. Supporting the sarcasm, this shows attitude emphasizes the target of the product as well as making the audience to have fun.

The competition between the boy and the elephant visualized the comparison and emphasized the product. Elephant’s hose works as a natural straw and comparing it to Oreo’s new straw-like product, showed the properties of the product as well as entertaining the audience. The company is trying to prove that their product is better and preferable in more than one way. This idea also supports the social symbolism present of the idea of being better and superior than natural powers using human brain and creativity. This symbolization proves that their product is better and renewed in a way that many people may want to try.
