1.0; COMPANY PROFILE FOR FISH PROCESSING INDUSTRY IN INDIA ( STAGE 1)

1.1: Food processing is the conversion of raw materials or ingredients into a consumer food product (Dennis R. Heldman, Richard W. Hartel) .Fish is a highly perishable item and apparently, bulk of the catch is sun-dried after salt curing. However, with progressively growing market, it has become very important to process scientifically for better shelf life as well.

1.12: India is gifted with a long coastline of 8129 Kms, 2 million Sq. Km of restricted Economic Zone, and 1.2 million hectares of brackish water bodies having a huge potential for development of fisheries. Since independence, the fishery sector has grown from 0.75 million tons in 1950 to the present production of 6.4 million tons worth Rs 320,000 million, and an export of nearly Rs.70.000 million. Nearly10 million people, living in 4,000 coastal villages and more number of interior villages, depend on fisheries to earn their livelihood. Post harvest, pre-processing, processing and marketing sectors are very much export-oriented and the domestic market awaits a major thrust, India ranks fourth in global fish production and second in aquaculture
