1. Complete the unit 2 review questions:

a. The bus physical topology consists of a single cable that connects all nodes on a network without intervening connectivity devices.

b. A(n) serial backbone is the simplest kind of backbone.

c. Fast Ethernet operates at 100-Mbps.

d. Switching is a component of a network’s logical topology that determines how connections are created between nodes.

e. One thing all Ethernet networks have in common is their access method, known as CSMA/CD.

2. For the client situation described in the Discussion/Project Topic above, use Microsoft Visio to generate a diagram for a proposed network topology. Write a 1-2 page proposal for the research group explaining why that design would best meet their needs.

The Surfing Shoppe Lab is demanding a network layout; their first need is trying to connect seven computers in two different rooms and connect the networks together, the second is to connect a printer where everyone can share that device. There are different types of networks topologies, the bus topology won’t fit the Surfing Shoppe Lab, because it is not very fault tolerant, according to Dean, T: “A final disadvantage to bus network is that they are not very fault tolerance. Fault tolerance is the capability for a component or system to continue functioning despite damage or malfunction” (p. 200). The network will be slower as more nodes are added or more devices are set up in the same network. The only advantage, there might be, for this network is to be relatively inexpensive for the Surfing Shoppe Lab.

The ring topology is similar to bus topology, that’s why that topology won’t work for The Surfing Shoppe Lab network. If the Lab is using a ring topology and any of the computers on the network has a single malfunction the entire network will be disabled. (Dean, T. p. 201). The star...
