LEADERSHIP

Introduction

According to Buchbinder & Shanks, every organization needs to have a leader and a manager (Buchinder & Shanks 2012). If we were to take this idea a little further, we would say, every organization should have a leader that knows how to manage and a manager that knows how to lead. A leader is one whose focus is more toward the external things of the organization, whereas the manager focus is on the internal things of the organization. An organization cannot function successfully if there is no one to focus on both the external and the internal. Leaders are to have a particular set of competencies that require more thinking than a managers does. Leaders set the direction in which the organization will go. They also are responsible for motivating stakeholders, being an effective spokesperson, determining strategies and transforming the organization. The skills of a manger are to staff personnel, control resources, supervising the services provided, oversee adherence to regulations, and counsel employees. A leader must understand the nature of organizational change this will help everyone that is a part of the organization conforms successful to the change (Studer, 2008).
