Population Out of Control

There is a lot of talk these days about overcrowding in major cities and countries around the world. As a result governments are trying to come up with a plan for population control. There is speculation of a food shortage in the near future. This is frightening for those of us with families. Hardworking people may soon not be able to find food for their families and children. According to www.emergencyfoodsupply.com many scientist are convinced that a worldwide famine is inevitable. Over farming and pollution is causing the farm lands to be lost. Currently over one billion people god to bed hungry every night. With the population steadily increasing and heading to over 11 billion people by 2060, there will be no way to feed all these people under the current system. (Emergency Food, 2011)

There are some that believe we are in if we do not get the population under control, there is an imminent danger awaiting us. The Emergency Food Supply predicts that the “demand for food will more than double over the next 50 years…Just consider the following quote from IWMI director general Colin Chartres....

"Current estimates indicate that we will not have enough water to feed ourselves in 25 years time, by when the current food crisis may turn into a perpetual crisis." (Emergency Food, 2011)

Those of the Functionalist Perspective believe that the solution to this problem is population control. The population and resources depend upon one another and must remain in balance. English clergyman Thomas Malthus had the belief that we have a limited ability to produce food. Therefore, we should postpone marriage or remain celibate. He believed that should the population continue to grow it would lead to death due to starvation, disease and war.
