Political

Laneige, one of a product line of Amore Pacific has been involved in a Hong Kong-Mainland conflict issue. On Jan 13th 2013, Facebook blogger reported that a local netizen was denied a purchase of a Christmas box set in a store of Laneige, because she is not a Mainland Chinese. The complaint provoked other Hong Kong netizens instantly. They called for a boycott against Laneige and spammed the Facebook page of the company, which released an apology statement hours after the report was posted.

However, a lot of netizens kept complaint their service, “I think the staff would not dare to ask such question herself? That means your company implied your staffs to ask during training?”, “I don’t accept your apology!”, “there are many brands that can replace your products. Good bye.” So that on January 15, Laneige published an apology letters in local newspapers to the customer, solemnly apologize for the incident.

Although the incident has come to an end, but the company's image in Hong Kong, has been undermined.

Economic

There would not be a serious impact to Amore Pacific since Hong Kong’s economy has been growing steadily in the recent years. As long as Hongkongers see cosmetics products as one of the daily necessities, the company will be benefited by such situation. The upscale products will sell better when the economy is strong, whilst the low-end products will receive a boost in the sales when there is a downturn in the economy.

Socio-cultural

Korean popular culture is not just for Koreans now. It is getting popular in other countries as the term “Hallyu” (Korean flow) indicates. The term at first was used to refer to popular songs, dramas, and movies that gained popularity in China, and now it is used to refer to Korean pop culture, include the makeup styles, spreading all over Asia such as Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong....
