Project Name Laptop performance extension
Background
Over the last three years the number of disciplines requiring high performance laptop computing has grown, even into the Humanities, Social Sciences and Health Sciences. A new cohort of researchers, especially post-graduate students, are also much more computer literate and demanding, although still not able to deal with the arcane and complex programming methods that is still required .
With the advent of new methods of research using ICT technology, the e-Research agendas of the Federal and State governments have developed to the point where a University can no longer ignore the computing and storage grids and associated funding and support being created and linked over the nation. Existing research with e-Research expertise and resources shows clearly the change in focus: from supporting specific research projects and equipment to research programs and methods of collaboration. The HSBC Platforms for Collaboration framework will include the creation of a computer grid , based on the model of local (institutional), regional (State based) and Federal realms all interconnected.
Access resources and funding from HSBC, as well as provide local researchers with a more versatile High performance laptop system, it is necessary we maintain a usable high performance computer cluster and associated specialized application servers able to provide compute cycles well beyond the desktop for key applications.
Vision
Purchase specific research analytical application for research cluster and other research computing.
Project Scope
To Purchase and install the nominated hardware
Constraints
Hardware must be for research purposes only and have a degree of wide application
Assumptions
Cost of application is accurate after long gestation period for project.
