Bottle Feeding
Sterilisation of equipment
Sterilisation is when all traces of bacteria and germs are removed. It is an important process when sterilising equipment as it reduces the risk of infection and prevents the spread of infection. Sterilisation is important for babies because their immune systems are not developed properly and they are more prone to developing infections and illnesses.
Before feeding a baby and making babies feeding all equipment, bottles, teats, retaining rings and caps should be washed with hot soapy water and then sterilised. This should be done each time they are being used. There are many ways to sterilise a babies feeding equipment. Electric steam and microwave sterilising are the most popular ways. Although, for when parents don’t have access to electricity and the traditional methods, such as boiling and cold water sterilising.
Electric steam sterilising
This method is quick and efficient only taking 8-12 minutes as well as cooling time. Bottles can be kept sterilised for up to six hours when they are left in the steriliser with the lid shut. Most electric sterilisers can hold up to six bottles each time and there’s a rack for smaller pieces of equipment such as teats and dummies.
Microwaving
Bottles on their own can be sterilised in the microwave. This is a quick way to sterilise bottles on there own as it only takes 90 seconds. Bottles must be put in unsealed to the microwave so that pressure cannot build up inside the bottle.
