Before and After Roe v. Wade

Abstract

Abortion is a term we have all heard and either have a negative or positive outlook on. It is a very controversial subject that first made “big” headlines in 1973 in the case of Roe v. Wade. Since then there have been many other cases trying to overturn and amend the law. Since then more and more activist groups have risen like the “Pro-Life” and “Pro-Choice” groups. Currently today there are still big headlines of states and federal governments trying to determine when life actually begins for a human being. New bills are being made daily to try to illegalize abortion except for exceptional reasons such as a woman’s life in danger. Only one state has passed this “personhood” law. One thing is for sure is that abortion is a very controversial subject and will continue to be a very controversial subject for a very long time.

Introduction

Abortion is the act of terminating pregnancy and ending up not giving birth. This may be done for several reason for instance, if a mother was raped; then having the child would always remind the woman of the day in her life that she least wants to remembers. Other reasons may be because the woman may not wish to have a baby at the time and would rather abort and plan for it another time, this may be because she lacks the financial stability to look after a child or she is still in school or in extreme cases the woman just does not want to have a child. The question of abortion has brought a lot of religious, medical, philosophical, legal and political debates often the question being, should abortion be legalized in the law as a right? Is this right interfering with the right of the child in the womb? Is the child a human being? Overall, it has been condensed to one question, when does life begin?

The debate of abortion has been tight for a very long time and remains very controversial even in the modern day. A landmark decision in 1973 in the case of Jane Roe against the Henry...
