The Hellenistic period starts off with the Macedonians also known as the ‘Ten Thousands.” The Macedonians lead the famous march of power to Macedon. This city was a royal place but in the fifth century before Christ, it was a wild and out of control country. Philip was the leader of the Macedonians. He followed the ideal and thought process of the Greek soldiers. With a heavy cavalry added, the Macedonians were a very powerful army in the world and no power on Earth could stop them. They conquered most of the Greek cities and called them their own. The grand and major plan in which this army was put together was to conquer all of Asia.

Philip was assassinated and was not able to complete the task that he set out at hand to do. Therefore, his son named Alexander (also known as Alexander the Great) was out to prove that he could carry out his fathers’ task. In 334 B.C., Alexander the Great led the Macedonians across the Asian border and conquered all of the land from Libya to Afghanistan. There was no cultural synthesis (an amalgamation of Greek and Macedonian cultures) in the Hellenistic age. Even though the Greek and Macedonians were very integrated after the invasion, they were still two very different cultures and did not embrace one another with open arms. However, actors, philosophers, and athletes often felt more comfortable in different cities other than the ones they came from.

Goods and fashion began to spread rapidly throughout this age. Overall the Hellenistic period changed the way people look at their world and continues today to impact the way we look at our world now.
