Being from the north, segregation is just a topic, something I learn about in school rather than a reality. Although there is some racism in the north, it does not have the history that the south does with it and so to me, has never been a reality. In Milwaukee, the city does have some distinct areas for certain races but there are not places where blacks are not “welcome”. It is weird for me to even think that blacks were not “socially allowed” to come to Ole Miss. I never thought things were that bad, but after watching the video I realized that they were. Of course I knew about all the segregation from a long time ago but I did not know there was still this big of segregation so recently. Coming to the south this video was a good way to learn and understand the history of not only segregation, but the history of the school, which is always beneficial. I found it so interesting that college students put up such a fight for James Meredith to come here. I would never think that so recently it would be a younger generation to not be accepting of the new student of color. Usually when people think of the new and younger generations, they see them as more open and understanding and doing the not normal for society. Overall, the video was a good ere opener and made me understand all that has happened. I now know history of my school and can share that with other people and show them how far we have come.
