On Chinese-English Translation of Yunnan Puzhehei Tourist Texts: a Functionalist Approach

Introduction

The Germany Functionalist theory considers translation as a purposeful cross-cultural human communicative activity, the translation of tourist texts are primarily meant to provide relevant tourism information to tourists, by which we believe that tourists can learn the natural beauty and culture features of the scenic spots as to spread Chinese culture and attract more foreign tourists to visit China.

Past a few decades have seen a blossom tourism economy in China since the beginning of opening and reform. With the emergence of a newly rich middle class and an easing of restrictions on movement by the Chinese authorities. At the same time, the booming tourism industry has also increased the need for well-translated tourist texts in order to provide sufficient traveling information for foreign tourists and then attract them to travel to China

We need always keep it in mind throughout the translation process that the Chinese-English(Hereinafter referred to as C-E) translation of tourist texts aim at providing foreign people as accurate traveling information as possible and stimulating their potential motivation as tourists to a certain scenic spot. In order to reach such goals, C-E translation of tourist texts shouldn’t stick to the original texts, instead various strategies need to be applied when translating to make sure it will keep to the record and maintain as much Culture Information as possible.

The chapters followed will shed light on why a functional approach C-E translation of tourist texts is needed, what its theoretical foundation is and how it works on Chinese scenic spots especially Yunnan Puzhehei. And finally a conclusion will be made regarding the topic.
