Accepting Karma

The third attitude towards karma that we observed in the movie is accepting karma. In the movie, both Lee and Big accept karma in the end. Now, let us see how they accept karma respectively.

For Lee, when Big first told her that she was a Japanese soldier who killed many lives in the past life, she did not want to accept the fact that she has to bear the result of the cause of the past life. She thought that it was very unreasonable and unfair.

But then, after thinking deeply, she accepted karma. She believed that no one can escape death in the end. As she will die one day, she wants to do what she can do now. So she went to the hill and was killed.

Although she knew that she could not change her karma, she could still give meaning and value to her actions. Although she knew that she would die, she could remain calm to face death.

For Big, he wanted to help Lee to change her karma at first. However, after he had saved her life for two times, he still saw the images of Japanese soldiers behind her. At that time, he thought that he could not change the karma. Nevertheless, when Lee died, he suddenly realized that it is not like what he thought. Lee changed from being killed by an Indian to a thief to Sun Ko. Her kindness in this life lets her not die unknowningly, but facing death calmly. Realizing this, Big can fully accept karma and have a new understanding of it. Although there is causality, today’s fruit does not all depend on the cause before. There can be variables between cause and effect, in which the variables are what we do today, resulting in the final karma. We cannot change our past, just like Lee cannot change the fact that she was a Japanese soldier, we can change karma’s effect, just like Lee can change the way she died.

We should not regret the past or worry the future, but to treasure the moment and live in the present.
