Introduction

New technology has had positive impacts in today’s world and will continue to do so. How we work and how we communicate has been transformed, saving enormous amounts of time. Many businesses and NGOs (non-government organizations) have been able to grow much more rapidly due to the new technology. It also means we have a more flexible society, one which allows people to be contacted anywhere – people no longer rely on office or house phones and computers; today we have mobiles, tablets, laptops and the Cloud.

The advances in technology have enabled the nonprofit sector to deliver effective services through developed work practices. Today, the nonprofit sector is raising money and increasing awareness of many issues using new technology such Facebook, Twitter, donor apps, text-to-donate etc. New technology has really opened up a whole new world for the nonprofit sector.

Social Media

Today, social media has become one of the most common topics in the non-government organizations of all sizes. Social media has been increasing in popularity every day; it started out as a system to reconnect with friends and family and today it has developed into a means for nonprofit organizations to extend awareness regarding key matters, raise funds, create online advocacy movements and mobilize supporters. Charities raise money in many different ways through government grants, and donors. Supporters donate through special fundraising events, public relations campaign and online giving. However, online giving has become one of the fastest growing way for nonprofits to raise funds. Last year large organizations saw 12.7% online giving growth, medium sized organizations grew 11.4% and small organizations grew 18.4% (Forbes, 2013).Social media such as Facebook, Twitter and mobile apps are ways nonprofits are raising funds and awareness for their causes.
