Globalization and State Sovereignty

After Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was reported as missing on 8 March 2014, Vietnam government announced the opening its territorial seas and airspace to the multinational search and rescue took by more than ten countries militaries. (Wikipedia, 2014) This event represents that

governments have adjusted their sovereignty awareness in response to global emergencies. Vietnam’s sovereignty was not threatened; instead, Vietnam’s government has gained more international respect by its search and rescue effort. Traditional sovereignty concept is also known as Westphalian

nation-state model, which defined that the sovereignty of nation-states on their territory is as same as a human’s life cannot be arbitrarily taken away. (What is meant by the ‘Westphalian System’) It has been a source of stability for more than two centuries. It also has made some of the important and continuing contributions toward international discourse, stability, and peace. After the World War Ⅱ, the established models and practices of state

sovereignty have been challenged by many forces abroad in the world. Since the 1990s, economic globalization has accelerated development in almost all areas of human life; meanwhile, it is changing the world economic and even political structure. The traditional sense of national boundaries has been blurred; the original concept of national sovereignty gradually has faded. "Non-nation-state" and "non-sovereignty" are becoming argument context of globalization. Many scholars believe autonomous decision-making and regulatory capacity of the national economy are limited during the process of economic globalization. organizations, such as World Trade Organization (WTO), International Monetary Fund (IMF), EU and World Bank, that have emerged in multitude, they established a close...
