Is suicide morally wrong? Should humans have the right to die voluntarily?

The reason why a person want to suicide are as follow: First, the bad situation of person A may affect the lives of his family. When his family visit him, they may feel sad and it also give a financial burden to his family. Person A may not want his family suffered. Therefore, he want to suicide so as to end the pain suffered by his family.

Second, the desire of suicide of person A is his own will. He may want to end the pain that he suffered, and economic burden of the medical fee and there are meaningless in continuing alive because he can do nothing but only lying on the bed.

By considering the reasons as mentioned, suicide is morally right by applying the self-interest theory. Since self-interest theory is to do things based on one’s own will, and to loving other people, to being heroic, is ultimately for our own benefit and gain. (PUIG, 2012) In this way, humans should have the right to die voluntarily.

However, when applying the Categorical Imperative theory which defines humans are born with an inborn sense of right and wrong, or a sense of ought: an intuitive classification of actions and choices as morally acceptable or unacceptable. (PUIG, 2012)

Some may say that humans should not have the right to die voluntarily because it is a life. We should treat every life equally despite of the disability of that person. Because Categorical Imperative advocate that humans should not be treated as objects or solely as a means to an end. In this case, suicide is morally wrong.

In terms of hedonism which defines ‘the good life’ through seeking maximum pleasure in human action, while also aiming to avoid pain. (PUIG, 2012), to some extent, suicide is morally wrong because the action of ending a life does not imply that maximize the pleasure person A’ since he would suffer pain when he commit suicide.
