1) LEADERSHIP DEFINED

Northouse P. defined the leadership as

“Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.”1

It define the leadership is a process, which means leadership is not static feature but dynamic and interactive feature. Leadership is not a traits or skills, which exist themselves alone. Leadership can happen in the situation of groups of people, some ot whom are followers and some or one of whom are leaders or a leader. If there is no group of people, it is hard for us to find leadership since leadership can happen interactively between followers and leaders. In groups of people, they pursue common goals so that they can form a group and achieve common tasks or benefits. They need a driver or momentum to achieve common goal, and the leader is a key factor to do that.

Then how is a leader can let followers do achieve common goal? The definition said that a leader influences a group of individuals in order to achieve the common goal. We can manage people to do their jobs effectively and timely manner by dissecting tasks and scheduling the tasks through the pipeline of a project and check the progress of each task and urge the responsible person if he or she did not good or lagged behind the schedule. But this is not the way the leader influences the group of individuals. The leader set up the vision and goal and let followers have confidences in their works. Without these activities, the leader is not a true leader but just a manager.

The leadership definition can be expressed differently in various fields, such as IT, Medicine, Nursing, Army, Teaching, and so on. So, there are many definitions about leadership. Among those, the common thing that can be easily understood is making things better.2...
