It gives and holds the body in an upright position. Without the small bone situated in the ear, the skeletal body would lose balance, if in motion. It supports the softer tissues and provides points of attachment for most skeletal muscles.

MOVEMENT: The bones in the skeletal system allow body motion with the support of the skeletal muscles, therefore working as antagonistic pairs, when associated muscles contract they cause the bones to move.

PRODUCTION OF BLOOD CELLS: The production of blood cells formation is also known as haemotopoiesis. The formation of most blood cells, namely: platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells are formed in a spongy bone called the red bone marrow. It forms red blood cells for the transport of rich oxygen and white blood cells for the body's immune system whereas platelets help with the normal blood clotting.

PROTECTION: Bones function to protect many of the body's organs reducing the risk of injury to the them, such as the brain which is surrounded by the skull. Another instance being; the ribcage protecting delicate organs such as the lungs, liver and heart and the vertebrae protecting the spinal cord.
