Definitions:

• Global Village: Concepts in which telecommunication and transportation technologies have essentially reduce time and distance effects to produce a single worldwide community.

• Multinational corporations (MNCs): Corporations with significant operations in more than one country.

*Human Resource Managers (HRM) needs to understand societal issues (such as status) that might affect operations in another country.

• The reason is because each country has different laws.

o Example: It is against the law for employer’s to take action against employees solely on the basis of an employee’s age.

1. Not all HRM theories and practices are universally applicable to managing human resources around the world.

2. HRM must take cultural values into account when trying to understand the behavior of people from different countries as well as those in different countries.

o Knowledge Workers- individuals whose jobs are designed around the acquisition and application of information.
