Youth Soccer
“From a beach in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to an empty lot in Europe, to a playground in the United States, soccer is one of the most popular sports played by young people throughout the world. On some occasions, thousands of people watch youth competitions” (Soccer 218b). Children around the world benefit from playing youth soccer in their everyday lives. Sports for children have become so popular that an estimated 20 million American children between the ages of six and sixteen play one or more sports each year (Seefeldt). In this case the sport is soccer. Soccer is a growing sport in the world and it has so many good things for kids. It is also very adventurous and outstandingly fun. The positive results of youth soccer are health, social, and attitude benefits.
The first benefit associated with youth soccer is health. Youth soccer today, suggests that parents and children believe soccer contributes positively to a youth’s health. This may be misleading due to a statistic that approximately seventy percent of the youths drop out of organized sports by the age of fifteen. Many of the youths are the ones losing the benefit of good health associated with sports. Clearly sports such as soccer, have both positive and negative health effects on children, but positive results can occur if the coaches and athletes conduct themselves in a responsible way. Many of the health benefits can be detected immediately, but the most sought after health benefits are those that last far beyond the athletes playing days. The health benefits of soccer must be identified, valued, and included daily in their practices and games.
