It was once said “ When people know that you believe in them, wondrous things begin to happen.” In other words, you may be surprised of the great accomplishment that can come from support, such as when a President, due to the support from their country, is elected he/she is more inclined to do the right thing for his/her supporters. Also, when a child in school needs to bring up a grade on their report card, if the teachers and parents really support them it will really motivated the child to succeed. Ceyx and Alycone, and Baucis and Philemon, from Edith Hamilton’s book of Mythology, express this quote through the use of setting and symbolism.
Hamilton uses symbolism and setting to illustrate the truth in the quote. For example, in the myth Ceyx and Alycone, Ceyx heads out to sea, but due to a horrible storm Ceyx dies out at sea. The god Morpheus, then travels into Alycone’s dream with the appearance of Ceyx to tell her the news. Once Alycone saw that her husband had died, she runs to a beach where she sees her husband. So through symbolism, when she goes to him the gods could them see that the outstanding amount of support Alycone had in Ceyx even though he was dead had to be rewarded. The gods rewarded them by transforming the lovers in birds to they are able to fly free together forever. Setting was also used to express the quote. Hamilton used to the setting of an ever-descending ocean to prove that no matter how deep it was, Alycone still ran to her husband even though she knew of his death, she still had a sense of support in him, even beyond Ceyx’s grave.
In the myth of Bacius and Philemon, Hamilton uses symbolism and descriptive language to portray the quote. Bacius and Philemon are two, not so wealthy, mortals who answer the door to Jupiter disguised as a beggar. When Bacius and Philemon take Jupiter in, they treat him like one of their own.
