Greek and Roman Architecture

Greek and Roman architecture are both were impressive in their times and also in our times. People have used many of their techniques to build arches and columns though out the world from their designs for building churches, buildings, as well as other things.

The Greeks architecture actually uses many columns in just about on all of their temples. The different shapes of the columns are a very important factor in that time. There were three different three types of columns which are known to be the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. All these columns have a center piece to where they displayed their Greek Gods, this is also where they put all of their different types if decorations. The two things that I know of that they worked on of their columns were the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens, and the Temple of Poseidon. The Temple of Zeus is a prime example of the Corinthian type architecture and The Temple of Poseidon was a prime example of the Doric type architecture.

The Roman architecture is the ones who only liked to use arches in their time. The arches really were good to use because they seemed to be able to hold more weight and pressure than what the columns where able to. The Romans also uses the columns but only as decorations. One famous place that used a lot of their arches and other techniques is the

Coliseum. They actually build a dome over the Coliseum to help protect the people from the weather. They actually used their arches a lot more than the columns because it would support the extra weight of the dome better than what the column could. Another perfect example of great work with their arch techniques is the Pantheon in Rome. The Pantheon house two of their greats kings and is one of the biggest surviving buildings in Roman architecture.
