The World of Squash that Surrounds Us

Squash is a sport for life. Around the world, squash continues to grow in popularity as society starts to accept and purse healthier lifestyles. In 2003, Forbes magazine indicated that squash was the healthiest sport in the world. As a tennis player, my fitness is a very high priority and in my brief exposure to squash, I have become an addict towards the game. Not only have my squash skills improved, but more importantly, I have found that my cardiovascular ability and speed have significantly increased as it directly translates to the tennis court. It is not a surprise then that squash is part of the Commonwealth games and is being considered to be included in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

In Edmonton, there are numerous opportunities for anyone to learn and play the game. I got into the sport by applying for an introductory squash class offered by the University of Alberta. As a class that always exceeds its student capacity, there is certainly potential for the sport to grow. There is a large market for squash in Alberta, and even though Calgary has more facilities and courts than Edmonton, there are many opportunities to play in the “City of Champions.”

A very important aspect for any sport to be desirable to the public is the opportunity for socialization. This is exhibited effectively by the University of Alberta annual squash tournament. This current year, for only $25 (for Squash Alberta members) or $35 (for non-members), you are treated to a pizza dinner, breakfast, and a social event at a local bar. Entering these tournaments becomes a great way to meet new players and build relationships that could last a lifetime. It’s a much better way to meet people than to post your level and phone number on a wall and hope someone calls you to play. As well, a free t-shirt is included with the entry fee and it never hurts to add to your wardrobe.
