Issue
It has come to my attention that not everyone in Canada has the opportunity to achieve the best possible mental health and well-being. Canada is home to millions of people from different cultures. According to the 2006 Census, the proportion of foreign-born population is at the highest level it has been in 75 years (Government of Canada, 2012). The changing patterns of migration to Canada pose new challenges to the delivery of mental health services (Kirmayer et al., 2011). Immigration involves three major sets of transition: changes in personal ties and the reconstruction of social networks, the move from one socio-economic system to another, and the shift from one cultural system to another (Kirmayer et al., 2011). New immigrants are twice as likely to have difficulties in accessing care as those born in Canada (Gushulak et al., 2011). Providing mental services and supports to such a diverse population can be challenging.
