Mixed Martial Arts

A new and exciting upcoming sport in today’s world is mixed martial arts. MMA as most call it is a non-stop, action packed event that will keep you off your seat the whole time. There are a lot of different martial art forms used in MMA but they all come down to three aspects; striking, ground skills, and submissions.

Striking is the main means of fighting in MMA. It is used both on the feet and on the ground. It can be by the fist, foot, knee, or elbow. It is a very affective way to disrupt your opponent and knock him out. There are many ways to strike an opponent but most MMA fighters train in boxing and in jujitsu for there striking skills and defense against strikes. Striking can lead to a fight stoppage in three ways. First is a knock out, this is where your opponent is unable to continue the fight. The second way is if you are forcing the issue and pressing the fight and your opponent isn’t protecting himself the referee will call a TKO (technical knock out) and you will win. The final way that striking can end a fight is if your opponent gets a cut that either won’t stop bleeding, swells up to much, or that is affecting your vision and the ref will call the match.

A good ground game is also a must in a MMA match. In the progress of the match if you can take your opponent to the ground you should. It looks really impressive to the judges and can give you the advantage. Because of this most fighters have a wrestling, jujitsu, combat, or a combination of these background trainings. There are two aspects to the ground game, the guy in guard or the guy in the mount. The guy in guard is on his back and is either looking for a submission, a way to escape, or the ref to stand them back up. In the mount you look to pass their guard, throw some punches, get a submission, or any other means of finishing the fight.
