Advantages of Single Gender Education

Same-sex education is the practice of conducting an environment where the two genders are separated into different schools and classrooms. This educational environment is being practiced all around the world for many different reasons. One of the most important reasons for same-gender school was due to their religions. In 1995, there were only a few schools offered single-sex education in the United States. According to National Association for Single Sex Public Education however, there are at least 253 schools that offer this educational environment as of November 2006 (2006). Most of these are COED public schools that offer single-sex classrooms and 51 of those schools are completely single-sex oriented (NASSPE, 2006). Recently, same-sex educations have become one of the biggest issues in the United States. Many people, parents especially, are concerned with the educational system of our future society. While some people argue against the idea of same-sex schools, high school students should be provided with same-gender environment for several reasons: to alleviate distractions, reduce problems between the sexes, and to provide more opportunities.

Critics say that high school students should not be engaged in a same-sex environment. They argue that separating the two genders can lower their self-esteem, limit diversification among students, and create a new type of segregation. It is true that students need to communicate widely through a diverse society with less segregation; however, these ideas can be taught in other various ways within a same-gender school environment. For instance, there can be some cultural diversity that can be observed in single-gender surroundings. Through this system, students may understand their gender better.
