The English language has been part of the Philippines’ official language along with Tagalog for decades now; recently, the balance apparently has shifted to Tagalog. Filipinos seem to use the English language less and less every day. The Philippines was the No. 1 English-speaking country in Asia, apparently due to many reasons they placed second to Malaysia (which has a 6.71 overall score, Philippines has a score of 6.69) in the recent language test results of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)1 (Marcelo, 2010). This contributed to the conclusion that Filipinos are slowly becoming poor in English. This research will answer why by responding to the following questions:
1. How did the educational system of the Philippines influence the deterioration of English proficiency in Filipinos?
2. How did the media and entertainment influence the deterioration of English proficiency in Filipinos?
3. How was nationalism influential in the deterioration of English proficiency in Filipinos?
Filipinos are slowly becoming poor in English due to poor educational system, media and entertainment, and nationalism.

There are many reasons debated that would explain the decline in English proficiency in the Philippines, one perhaps will be the textbooks that we use not only to teach the English language, but other subjects as well that is written in English.
